Just an example of the kinda fun you can have with my "Bamboo background" photo. Almost anything you do to it makes it very cartoonish and psychedelic. I think it's because all the lines are easily identifiable. They work well in silhouette, which means they work equally well when you mess with the colors and/or simplify them.
To get this, I just hit "value invert" on the original in GIMP, upped the contrast a little, then upped the saturation.
