Some textures from graves in a small cemetery in Paia, a small town on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The cemetery itself was very interesting. The most common dates on the graves were from the 1800's, with most of the modern ones dating around 1950. The few from the 2000's I found were the graves of very old people, in graves identical to the ones adjacent to theirs, dated much earlier. They had obviously chosen a plot next to family. The cemetery was predominately Buddhist-oriented. The names were mostly Japanese, written in Kanji, with a few offerings left nearby. A Buddhist temple is to one side of it (the Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission of Paia), and I have to wonder if that explains the way the cemetery is kept: all of the grass was dead in the hot sun, the graves left to grow barnacles and decay until dates, names, and sometimes the headstone itself were completely erased. Over the edge of a nearby cliff, there's a beach, and I believe you could see a few ancient headstones half-buried in the sand. It's a beautiful but bittersweet place. Everything seems dead but pretty, and very, very old. You can see and feel time passing.

I don't feel it would be right to post the graves themselves. It might be disrespectful to the families of the dead, and I don't want them to be used as nothing but scenery. The textures, though, I think that's okay. Seeing life and time passing in the photos is strangely beautiful to me, and there's a romance in using their decay to make new art. So that's where I'm coming from here.
